At Dominican University of California, I am pursuing my bachelor degree in Education along with my teaching credential. While pursuing my bachelor degree in education, I am as well minoring in Community Action & Social Change. I chose Dominican because of its education program's reputation and knowing that at the end of my four years I will earn my teaching credential. As well as through the program I get straight into the classroom and observing which is something that not many colleges and universities offer.
As part of my minor for Community Action & Social Change it is required to participate in a service learning class. During my first year at Dominican, I was able to be in my first service learning class which was Liberation Theologies. My community partner that I worked with my freshman year was the Ritter Center. The Ritter Center's mission was "preventing and resolving homelessness and improve the health, dignity and well-being of people living in poverty in Marin County by providing high-quality, culturally sensitive, easily accessible medical care and social services". It taught my the value of not judging a person's appearance on the street because we do not know what they went through to get them to the place they are on the street or what they may be going through to put food on the table. My sophomore year I worked with DXL Program which was an after-school program at Davidson Middle that provided low-income students access to homework help, tutoring services, etc. As an education major this strengthened my relationship with students even more and the passion for teaching.
