Coleman Elementary School
My first semester in the Education Studies Program was to go into a school, and observe in a classroom. I have done some student observation before in Santa Fe, NM, so I was excited to do some more observations. I decided to be placed in a 5th grade class because I wanted to see the differences in the grade level. When I was doing student observations in Santa Fe, I was in a 2nd grade class so I wanted some variety. I was placed at Coleman Elementary School for the 2022 school year to do my student observations. The teacher that I worked with that semester was Mary Kate Kennedy, she taught 5th grade. I always looked for the day when I could go into the class and help out her students. I helped them with their math, reading, and writing for the reading projects. This class was well organized, which made it useful for the students. Mary Kate Kennedy had a really great handle on the class, even when it got out of hand. Her students enjoyed the way she would teach because it provided them with a way of learning something new each day.
For the 2023 semester I was placed at Coleman Elementary School. This time instead of working in a fifth grade classroom I was in a third grade classroom. I was very excited to be in a third grade classroom because there is such a big difference between fifth grade and third grade. Below is my student reflection of my 2023 spring semester student observations
When I came to this class on the first day I got lost because I did not know where it was, so I had to ask the secretary where the class was. They were at P.E, so I headed over to the gym and they were having a lot of fun in P.E. Each one of the kids seemed to have such fun and enjoyed what they were doing. Afterwards we went back to the classroom and the students continued on the lesson they were learning that morning or doing a fun activity such as the Valentine's Day activity. The students are learning at a steady pace but also they are having fun. Ms. Sanchez makes the classroom really welcoming for me as an observer but also for the students. She has a lot of strengths which are successful in the classroom such as getting the students engaged, getting the classes attention when they start to be loud and off task, and providing ELL and SPED kids with the same materials as the rest of the class but giving those kids help when they need the assitants. Those are amazing and wonderful qualities of a teacher. Overall this classroom has been my favorite classroom just because the kids loved seeing me, and were sad when I had to go back. I enjoyed being able to help out the students.
