WHS MicroBank

What is WHS MicroBank?

The WHS MicroBank is one of the first student-run microfinance institutions in Massachusetts. We provide small loans for low income entrepreneurs in the world's developing nations as well as to businesses in the Worcester area, which can be used for starting up and scaling enterprises. Students learn valuable skills in both finance and philanthropy while gaining access to numerous volunteering opportunities through our fundraisers, which is our primary funding method. This coming year, we plan on filing for nonprofit status to open investments into the fund to town members and also partner with the Westborough Economic Development Committee to supply internships to students.

'Planting the seeds of development'

*No prerequisites to join, although gaining committee positions requires a short application.

The WHS Microbank...

- Currently operates a portfolio of 3 entrepreneurs in Rwanda and Ghana, who were able to successfully start their own food retail businesses in their communities.

- Landed a partnership with the Town of Westborough to hold an accelerator program for informal businesses, with the WHS MicroBank providing the first round of funding

- Held 3 fundraisers and raised almost $2000 during COVID-19, which was extremely difficult due to social distancing restrictions

"I really enjoyed being able to make an impact on someone's life, no matter how small"
"I learned valuable financial skills that can be very useful in landing future internships and experience future endeavors"
