CONTENT SUMMARY
Week 9 marked the start of our third and final project. In our groups we are to create a company and brand with a service similar to each of our chosen disciplines. We are to then create a website with it along with our own portfolios attached. This is then to be presented to the rest of the class through a 10 minute presentation. This project encompasses all the content taught in the previous weeks and the last two projects.
Peter wanted to keep the content this week on the lighter side and just touched upon a couple of points he thought might interest us. These points were more or less directed to us if we were looking to start a company in the foreseeable future and what too look out for/understand when getting into this venture:
Sole trading is dangerous and partnerships are even more dangerous.
Enter the industry as a PTY LTD ($1000.00) as opposed to a sole trade (free) as it lessens your liability significantly compared to a sole trader and is usually less dangerous.
Public liability is usually around 10-20 million dollars. It can be higher depending on the location and situation.
Small business development corporation website is a good source of information https://www.smallbusiness.wa.gov.au/
Peter also went around to each group to see what each group was proposing for their business idea. We had decided our business idea in week 1-2 so when Peter came around to us we already had a pitch that was relatively well put together. We spent the rest of the class exchanging ideas and brainstorm a plan of attack with our meeting minutes and completing a portion of the analysis we had to perform on our group.
POST CLASS REFLECTION - INDIVIDUAL PROGRESS
Reflecting back on the content now, I'm not entirely on board with what Peter was talking about when it came to the warnings he gave when going into business for ourselves. It's something that I am definitely interested in and would love to look into. In regards to the project, I understand the brief but I am a little confused as to where and how the portfolio component fits into the website. Do we make it on the website itself? Or is it separate? He did mention that this is the start of our portfolio that we will be using to get us our internships towards the end of our studies, so maybe it is separate from the website. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried about what I have to show for my portfolio component. At this point in time, I only have the projects I completed in the previous trimester to present. There are the two tracks I have produced in the past but I am not sure if that's enough.
POST CLASS REFLECTION - GROUP DYNAMICS
All of the group members were in attendance today, including Cody which was good. Cody had previously explained that he had personal issues that affected his commitment and his attendance. During this class we came to the realisation that we had not completed the analysis Peter had asked us via email the previous week. We used our group time to complete part of the analysis on our proposed company however half way through Cody and myself had to leave early for personal reasons. Jack and Kieran managed to complete the bulk of the analysis without out us but before we decided we would wait until our Zoom call before delegating the tasks.
During that said Zoom call I was delegated with the analysis of the competition while the others were given their respective parts of the analysis that had not been completed. This Zoom call was mainly centred around the aesthetics and the direction we wanted to go in terms of design and visuals. We planned for the follow up Zoom call to be more centred around the creation of the website, so we were all tasked to brainstorm ideas for the website's general functions.
