PRE CLASS ACTIVITIES
No pre-class activity this week as we are planning within our groups for the upcoming second project. What needs to be completed by the end of this session regarding Project 2:
Decide on a solid idea for Project 2 with Bryce and Kieran.
Start working and populating the plan template.
Research into what microphones we will be using.
IN CLASS SUMMARY
Computer lab
Only a small portion of the students arrived for the session today, that could be due to the looming COVID-19 lockdown that was put into affect tonight. The session started off with Wayne making sure the rest of the session had submitted their projects on campus online. The session today was mostly to geared towards planning our second project. For Project 2 we must record anything of our choice with two microphones and then after bouncing the mix we are to mix down the project individually.
Kieran, Bryce and myself decided on recording a chapter of a book with accompanying sound effects. We chose this because it was different to the last project and gave us a little challenge to try and overcome: sound effects. This would test our creative and problem solving skills as we would need to record most of the effects and mix them so they sound convincing. Some ideas were tossed around and I think we are going to go with a poem or a chapter from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'.
Microphones and the different aspects of them were also touched upon as well such as: polar patterns, SPL handling and sensitivity for different microphones. Wayne implored us to do some extra research into the different types of microphones and how some of them might help in our upcoming project.

POST CLASS REFLECTION
The microphones section of the session I wasn't too familiar with but I was understanding most of what Wayne was explaining. As stated before, this was session was mostly for us to get a head start on Project 2. My group did a good job in our last project but I asked them if this time around I could have more of an active hand in the recording process because I felt I didn't contribute as much as Kieran and Bryce did last time. Kieran agreed and said he wants to step back in some places to allow me to be more involved. With Project 2, I think we are on the right track and I think our planning skills are a lot better than last time , meaning that whatever it is we decide to record will be of a high standard hopefully.
We still have yet to decide what written text we will be using for our recording. Kieran and I suggested a poem and Bryce suggested a chapter from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Judging from mine and Kieran's reaction it looks like we may be using Bryce's idea but we still said we wanted to explore our options and then decide next session what we wanted to record. For instance, Bryce found this short story about cooking soup which had a humorous and dark tone to it.
Before next class I need to complete some pre class activities about microphones; Wayne highly suggested it. This should be interesting as I am not too familiar with microphones and how they work. It's an excellent opportunity for me to understand the microphones before our next project.
Wayne did email me regarding my learning journal last week. He said that he had looked at my Project 1 page as well as my learning journal as a whole and was impressed with how it was displayed. It was great to receive that feedback because I know how hard I've worked over the last 5 week's with this module.
TRANSFERRABLE SKILL: CREATIVE
Looking at the project you are about to embark on, identify risks that may present themselves and present some solutions.
Recording and mixing sound effects: The idea of recording and mixing sound effects sounds good on paper but, when dissecting it down it may possibly be the most challenging hurdle for my group and myself to overcome. Firstly, we are going to have to plan what sound effects we are going to incorporate that would complement the short piece of spoken word we will be doing. Secondly, we will need to find suitable ways of recording these sound effects nice and clean in the studio. Finally, after recording them we will need to mix them. To tackle this challenge, I think if we were to use cognitive outsourcing and do more out of classroom research to expand our knowledge in regards to mixing sound effects we would be able to find informative techniques to implement into our project.
Choosing the correct audiobook: When it comes to the project, a risk I feel that might be prevalent will be possibly the audiobook. We won’t know until we are recording whether or not the audiobook will suit the project, whether the voice talent will fit the audiobook or, whether sound effects will even compliment the audiobook.
A solution to this may be to send audiobooks and other media to each other so that we can all analyze it and discuss the pros and cons of each of them. Additional studio time may be required.
Mixing the bounced mix solo: In the following weeks we will most likely be learning more regarding Pro Tools and how to mix it. However, that may not be enough for me to fully grasp Pro Tools and apply it for when I have to mix the group bounced mix separately. The recent lockdown for week 4, due to COVID-19, has put our class on hold for the week and I'm sure we will resume the following week with this week's content but, in the event that we do not and we move straight into week 5 there may not be enough time to catch up on content lost in week 4. One way around this would be to use the LinkedIn Learning tutorials regarding further use of Pro Tools and becoming familiar with it by the end of week 4 for so when it comes to mixing the project I am a lot more comfortable and it's not so out of my comfort zone.
