Compared to Project 1 this project was so much more enjoyable and manageable. This was thanks in no small part to my group members Kieran and George. There was great communication, each of us had a great team player attitude and we all shared the work load of the project equally. Looking back I can definitely say that this experience was a great display of all our interpersonal and professional skills; I'd even say it helped develop intrapersonal skills like my self confidence and positive attitude.
This project was easier to complete than the last project in my opinion, although there was more to do this time around. It was very interesting learning about the SPL measurements, human hearing levels versus exposure times and the anatomy of the human ear. The anatomy of the ear was my favorite part about this project, I knew the ear was complex but never knew how it worked and how delicate and sensitive it is. It's absolutely amazing to know how detailed it is compared to some of the other parts of our bodies, such as our eyes.
Did we have any issues regarding the project? I personally don't think we encountered many issues. The only issue I can say we had was that we didn't get the ball rolling for laying out and planning the project until the beginning of the week. Same goes for setting up the group Zoom calls. These are minor issues however, and I also didn't really know my group partners until the second week of the project when I asked Sam who I was partnered with. We all captured the recordings on Decibel X and ran into no issues when using it and sharing our findings between ourselves.
Each of us recorded two sounds on our smartphones and shared them in a Google Drive folder for everyone to analyse. We recorded individual sounds due to our conflicting busy schedules. The crosswalk at the intersection in Northbridge and the interior of a Transperth moving bus were the sounds I captured. Kieran also suggested that we divide the parts of the human ear between ourselves to research to free up the workload for the project. The assigned parts were as followed:
Pinna (Kieran).
Auditory ossicles (Kieran).
Estuchian tube (Kieran).
Tympanic membrane (George).
Cochlea (George).
Tympanic cavity (Myself).
External auditory canal (Myself).
Vestibule (Myself).
*George was only given two because they are the most important and complex parts with the most information*
This was definitely a much easier and smart way of going about the project. The only critique I have for myself is that I could of maybe incorporated more of the terms that we covered in class over the last couple of weeks since Project 1. However, a lot of these terms are quite complex and I'm not exactly sure how I would of included/related them in my SPL measurement analysis.
Again I would like to reiterate, this project was a lot easier than the last due to the shared workload. Was it more interesting? I personally found the last project more interesting, I just stressed myself out of the enjoyment of it. There's not really much I can do differently in future projects apart from looking into more of the terms in the first week of a new project so that I have more ammunition when it comes to analysing and discussing sounds. Establishing communication with my group as well as utilising my time a little better earlier on next time would also help.
