Netball
Lead by qualified L2 Netball coach, Sammi Parratt, the Netball programme has an emphasis on developing teamwork, game understanding and core skills.
A full training programme is run for 2 teams competing in the Hampshire Colleges Netball League. Netball at Queen Mary's operates on the basis that is a student shows an interest in playing, then there will be every opportunity to improve skills and represent the College teams. Netball takes place in the College Sports Hall, with additional facilities for matches being available at Russell Howard Netball Centre where required.
Training:
Training is allocated on the timetable on a Friday morning from 09:00-11:30. This includes fitness and match play. Coaches will provide additional fitness advice where players require this support. As well as a focus on the development of technical aspects of the game, players have an opportunity to broaden their skills in officiating, coaching and performance analysis.
Competition:
Matches take place on a Wednesday afternoon and the College competes in the Hampshire Colleges League. Matches are played both home and away in different areas of the county; as such this can sometimes mean leaving College slightly early and returning after College would normally finish.
Teams also participate in the Hampshire round of the National Schools Netball Competition and the AoC Regional qualifying tournament.
Other opportunities:
There are strong links with local clubs which are beneficial in promoting participation beyond just competing for College. As such, additional representation and participation in Netball externally is highly recommended for developing skills and match experience.
The established local links also provide the opportunity for students to coach and develop their officiating skills, whilst working towards gaining an umpiring qualification.
Cost:
£50 per year. This includes provision of facilities, transport, and affiliation to relevant organisations. Subsidised team kit is also included.
