Level 3 Sport & Exercise Sciences Extended Certificate

Course Summary

Are you keen to study Sport alongside other subjects across the college? Are you serious about body systems and their response to exercise? Are you motivated to explore how the mind might affect performance? If so, this course could be a great choice for you!

By studying this programme, students will gain a valuable high order skillset ready to enter higher education, or progress directly into employment. Students will study a variety of concepts associated with Sport and Exercise Science, particularly in terms of physiology, fitness testing and training a health screening. Students will also complete an independent research project in the second year.

The course is the equivalent of 1 A Level.

Specific entry requirements

Grade 4 GCSE PE or equivalent beneficial but not essential.

Grade 4 in Science.

Grade 4 GCSE English and Maths.

Progression skills and opportunities

Students will study the Certificate in year 1 and, upon successful completion of this, will progress onto the Subsidiary Diploma in year 2, which is the equivalent of 1 A Level. This course prepares you for further study or career within the sport and other business sectors, including:

  • Sport and Recreation Facility Management

  • Health Promotion

  • Fitness and Personal Training

  • Coaching/Teaching/Training

  • Sports Therapy

  • Sports Development Officers

How is the course assessed?

The course is predominantly assessed through vocationally relevant coursework assignments and projects, applying your knowledge and understanding of a range of key concepts.

  • Sport and Exercise Psychology

  • Fitness Training and Programming

  • Current Issues in Sport

  • Research Project in Sport Programming

Will I need any specialist materials or equipment?

You will need sports kit for all practical based lessons. An online text book will be available to support your understanding of key concepts.

Student Destinations

Matt Coleman - completed qualification in June 2019. Now studying for a degree in Aviation and Airline Management at Birmingham University.

Jasmine Kinchin - completed qualification in June 2019. Offered a place on an apprenticeship degree with both KPMG and RSM to train as an accountant.

Sam Weller - completed qualification in June 2019. Now studying for a degree in Sports Management at Bournemouth University.
