Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym Based Exercise)

Pre-requisites

Successful completion of L1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity, including maintaining an appropriate attendance and adhering to practical session requirements.

Course description

This qualification is aimed at the learner who wants to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise. The course is both theoretically and practically based and covers:

  • Anatomy and physiology, including: the heart and circulatory system, the respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, postural and core stability and the nervous and energy systems and their relation to exercise.

  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments.

  • How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients.

  • How to communicate with clients effectively and maintain motivation to adhere to an exercise programme.

  • The skills and knowledge to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme.

Delivery

4 lessons per week for approximately two terms. December/January start following successful completion of L1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity.

Assessment

Practically, there are both formative and summative assessments done internally. In addition, candidates must pass two multiple-choice theory papers on Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health.

Cost

£125 which includes provision of mandatory theory manuals, learner assessment record and certification. Students also receive a course t-shirt to be worn in all practical sessions.
