National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

Course Information

Pre-requisites

16 years of age and be able to complete the following:

  • Jump or dive into deep water

  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds

  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back

  • In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds

  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool

  • Climb out of a pool unaided without using a ladder or steps

Course description

The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification which lasts for 2 years.

Delivery

3-4 lessons per week for approximately one term. September and / or January start. Maximum of 12 candidates per course.

Assessment

The assessment is split into three sections and takes place at the end of the course by an external assessor. It includes a multiple-choice question paper and practical skills assessment in CPR, water rescues and first aid. The qualification is valid for two years from the start of achievement, although candidates must attend 2 hours of training per month to maintain competency.

Cost

£100 which includes provision of the RLSS latest edition course manual, assessment fees and certification.
