2024 has been a dynamic array of musical releases across all genres, with several record breaking albums, rise of new artists, and return of iconic artists. With the 67th Annual Grammy Awards set to take place February 2nd, 2025, anticipation is at an all time high as fans and critics eagerly wait to see which artists take home the coveted awards.
2024 was a year undoubtedly dominated by strong female artists leading the charts and redefining the cultural landscape. We’ve seen a breakthrough for many singers, with artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappel Roan, and Charli XCX flooding the scene. Carpenter and Roan drew large crowds at Coachella, gaining a following for their unique styles and stage presence. Both women were nominated for “Best New Artist” at this year’s Grammy Awards. “Espresso” and “Good Luck, Babe” were smash hits, both receiving a “Record of the Year” nomination. Charli XCX has had multiple chart topping hits in the past, including “I Love It” and “Fancy.” But this year, Charli created a cultural movement with her album “Brat.” The unique album cover and aesthetic became a defining feature of 2024, to such a degree that it was included in Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.
2024 also saw a return of the music industry's most iconic artists. Ariana Grande’s anticipated return to music occurred with the release of her 7th studio album “Eternal Sunshine.” The Recording Academy sparked controversy when Grande’s album surprisingly did not receive a nomination for “Album of the Year,” although she did receive three other nominations. Beyoncé made a shocking genre switch, releasing her first country album “Cowboy Carter,” securing her nominations in the Grammy’s country categories. Billie Eilish released her third studio album “Hit Me Hard And Soft,” which received a whopping 7 nominations, including her duet “Guess” with Charli xcx. Pop phenomena Taylor Swift released her record breaking album “The Tortured Poets Department,” which many anticipate will win her the coveted “Album of the Year” award. Swift is the only artist in Grammy history to win “Album of the Year” 4 times, and she will be breaking her own record if she sweeps the award this year as well. Swift’s “Eras Tour” generated billions of revenue, making it the highest grossing tour of all time, and crowning Swift the first woman to become a billionaire solely through music sales.
2024 has unquestionably been a landmark year for the music industry, with a blend of rising new talent and the triumphant return of legendary artists, 2024’s musical legacy will shape the industry for years to come.
