Nisky's Multicultural Fair

“We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic.  Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” -  Former President Jimmy Carter

It is commonly said that the United States is the melting pot of the world, and at the Niskayuna high school, students were able to witness this first hand during the multicultural fair on March 8th, 2024.  The event started with around a hundred students setting up the tables and arranging dances. When others began visiting the fair during their lunches or periods of free time, news of the event spread to virtually everyone in the high school.  The gym was packed every single lunch mod with students and teachers trying different foods, playing different games, and cheering on the performers.

At first glance, people would assume that fourteen different countries were being represented at the fair. However, each country’s representatives tend to share the same desire: a human need for self expression.  Whether it is through the different tastes in foods, types of music, dance movements, or games, all of these cultural aspects can be a means of portraying ourselves, our roots, and the things that make us who we are.  This happiness tends to multiply when others take joy in the same things, especially when they are new to it.

I was lucky enough to be involved in the fair through several different ways.  While representing my Indian culture, I also got the chance to represent Greece through a dance led by Mrs. Christou, which involved students from all different cultures. Although changing between the dances was hectic, the overall experience was worthwhile, since I got to experience the differences and similarities between the two cultures.

There is a popular sanskrit saying, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means “The World is One Family.”  Through the multicultural fair, students got to witness this as people from all different cultures and backgrounds got together to celebrate the diversity and human collaboration that allows society to advance.
