Nisky United Talent Show

Funny jokes, accompanied by immense laughter, could be heard throughout the auditorium. Music playing and voices singing created a fun atmosphere where everyone could share their talent. Whether they were a viewer in the audience, a performer up on stage, or someone just passing by in the hallway, no one could mistake the vibrant energy and electricity in the air. On April 26th, Nisky United members, students, teachers and parents all came together to witness the Nisky United 6th annual talent show. With an array of talents from dancing, singing, comedy and more, it was a fun night where the sense of community was undeniable.

Walking down the hallways, students may have noticed a banner hanging up where a window used to be in crossroads. For some, this banner might hold no significance, looking like just another new addition to the school. However, not only is it a symbol of the inclusivity at Niskayuna, but it represents all the hard work that students and staff have put in to make everyone feel welcome.

The banner reveal occurred before the talent show. As community members gathered around, the night started off with food and drinks, a precursor for the upcoming fun and energy that everyone needed. As more people arrived, the time for the show was fast approaching. Gathering together, members of Unified sports and Nisky United congregated in the hall. As a group, all members raced into crossroads to the shouts and applause of community members, who excitedly welcomed these students. Not only could you see students smiling from ear to ear, but the clapping that accompanied the smiles made the atmosphere even more ecstatic. The genuine happiness of all involved was visible to anyone watching.

The speeches that followed not only captured the goals of Nisky United and Unified sports, but also demonstrated the powerful companionship that everyone felt. Members of the club shared their wonderful experiences, how they came across Nisky United, and why they felt happy to be a part of this community. Following the student speeches, a representative from the Special Olympics spoke. The Special Olympics has honored Niskayuna High School as being a National Unified Champion School. This achievement is not easy to come by, and reflects the commitment of students and staff who work hard to create an inclusive environment for students with and without disabilities. From the variety of Unified sports at the high school such as bowling, basketball, or cheerleading, to the fun clubs such as Nisky United (which hosts events such as their annual dance or trivia night) and the All Star Athletes club (which allows students of all abilities to play sports), this banner illustrates and recognises the many programs at the Nisky high school which allows for the inclusion of all students.

Following the award, the talent show began. Exhilarating claps echoed through the auditorium, shouts of congratulations could be heard every which way, and laughter bounced off the walls. Not only did the talent show demonstrate the supportive nature of all the students, but showed the kindness that everyone had, making the event a special time where all students, regardless of who they were, could share their talents and be recognised for it.

As the talent show came to a close, audience members rushed to get performer’s autographs, talk with friends, and share the special moment with their families. When students walk through the high school and pass by the banner hanging up in the school, they should know that it is a representation of the close community available, as well as the achievements that the Niskayuna high school has made to make the school a more unified place.
