Updates on Iroquois' Reconstruction

For about 50 years after its construction in September 1970, the Iroquois Middle School had only gone through minor renovations and technological improvements. The middle school was mostly known for its long “L” shape that consisted of beige colored bricks, blue windows, and white pavement. Then, on October 25th, 2022, the board of education approved a plan to carry out extensive construction and renovations on Iroquois Middle School.

This plan consists of several phases. As previously explained by Principal Fyvie, Phase 1 began in November 2022 and lasted for approximately 2 years. 20 classrooms have been added to the side of the building that faces the Iroquois driveway. In addition, major drainage infrastructure has been installed throughout the middle school. The following image shows the completed results of Phase 1.

As viewers can see, the modern addition to the Iroquois Middle School sharply contrasts with the original building. While old elements like the beige colored brick scheme are kept, new elements like the white, gray, and red sections of the building have been added. These clean sidings and larger glass windows truly emphasize the shift in architecture between 1970 to now.

Notably, the Iroquois Parking lot has also experienced major reconstruction. Previous students may remember the headache that was the middle school’s parking lot. There were noticeable cracks in the road, as well as notorious potholes that often lingered on parents’ minds. Before reconstruction began, Superintendent Mummenthey stated “We recognize that some of our driveways, roadways, and parking lots are in need of repair and/or repaving.” He also mentioned, “There are plans for the Iroquois Driveway and the entire parking lot area to be repaired.” As promised by Superintendent Mummenthey, the roads at Iroquois Middle School have been entirely repaved, as well as restructured. This new, smooth driving area has also been outlined with brand new parking lines.

After Phase 1, Iroquois has since been in the next phases of reconstruction. Turning attention away from the exterior of the building, renovations are being done throughout the interior of the building, especially in classroom spaces. On the first floor, leveling, moisture mitigation, and flooring have all been worked on. Other installations like cabinetry have also been added to the newly constructed science rooms and other classrooms. On the second floor, new student bathrooms are currently being built in the regions that were previously science classrooms.

Once all of this classroom work is complete, there will be additional renovations done throughout the rest of the Iroquois building. These renovations will have the same modern look and design as the exterior of the building does. It is anticipated that all reconstructive work will be completed in early 2026. Then, in the 2026-2027 school year, the current plan is that the Iroquois Middle School will hold all students from 7th-8th grade while VA will hold those in 5th-6th grade.

As the infrastructure phases are being successfully worked on and completed, those at the Silver Scribe look forward to what comes next in this exciting reconstruction project.
