Things I love…
hugs
the kind that are so bone crushing
you feel like you can't breathe
like your ribs are going to snap in half
and your body will turn to mush
but you would never turn one down
blankets
the kind that you can't help but touch
as you walk through the department store
brushing across your fingers as you walk by
the materials feeling lingering
highlighters
the fancy kind
the kind your mom won’t buy for you
during school shopping
so you ask for them for Christmas
the kind that are double ended
fine tip on one end and brush tip on the other
flowers
the kind that cover front porches in the summer
trips to the garden center at your local hardware store
the smell of soil on your hands
as you transfer them from the black plastic container
to the colorful ceramic pots that you carefully picked
to match the color of each flower
thunderstorms
especially the ones at night
the kind that you fall asleep to
the rain hitting your window
and the occasional flash of lightning
lighting up the entire sky
concerts
the rush and adrenaline of waiting in line
to see an artist that you have waited forever to see
spending too much to money at the merchandise stand
making your way to the seats
the excitement rising
the lights going out and the music starting
squeezing your friends hand so tight
you think your fingers will break

Dear the Color Blue,
Thank you for painting the sky with your
Glorious color every morning,
The comforting hue that stretches for miles
Into seeming nothingness
Thank you for the deepness of the ocean
The sparkling color that can be seen out of
Plane windows and off of boat decks
Reaching further then has even been discovered
Thank you for all the wildlife you have
Blessed with your vibrant shades, light and dark
Birds, lizards, fish and frogs
One small part of nature's rainbow
Thank you for the way you make eyes shine
Occasionally sharing the space with the shade of grass,
Reflecting off the sun,
To create a display of the colors of the earth
Thank you for the landmarks your hue flows through
Marking the best parts of trips and adventures
Waterfalls, lakes, rivers, gulfs, bays
Painting the world with your color
My name is Lily Deming and I’m a senior in highschool this year. The thing I love most about writing is that it allows you to transport yourself into other worlds. It’s almost like reading, only you get to create the story.
