SPHS, Semester 1, 2022-2023
Welcome to our site, featuring poems, short stories and creative nonfiction pieces written by the students in St Peter High School's first ever Creative Writing class. This amazing group of gifted young people in grades 9-12 have worked hard this semester. I am proud of them for committing to their craft, pushing their boundaries, and supporting each other along the way. I feel so lucky to have started my day with this group; they have inspired me, challenged me, and reminded me why I chose to do this job almost thirty years ago. It would be a shame if I were the only one to have the opportunity to read their fantastic writing. This is a small sample of their work, selected by the authors. Enjoy! Paulette Topel, English Teacher
Members of the class are pictured with Rebecca Fjelland Davis, local author of Slider's Son, Chasing AllieCat, and Jake Riley: Irreparably Damaged. The students are so grateful to Ms. Davis for taking the time to share her journey and process as a writer, answer all their questions, and guide them through the art of screenwriting. It was a fun and educational experience; the students were energized and motivated by Ms. Davis!
Much gratitude to Rachel Hanel, Associate Professor at MNSU, Waseca native, and published author, who gave of her time and energy to share the art of creative nonfiction with the class. Ms. Hanel explained the different types of creative nonfiction and how to navigate the challenge of memory, truth and perspective. Her inspirational message to always follow your passions and build a professional life around them really resonated with the students, many of whom plan to persue a future in writing. Finally, her long journey from conception to completion for Not the Camilla We Knew, her latest book, served as a reminder to never give up on what you believe in!
