How do the systems of the body influence and respond to movement?
Demonstrate and analyse how the systems of the body work together in a variety of movements
The interrelationship of body systems during movement
All body systems have some relationship with movement, particularly the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine and neural body systems. It is often the interaction between these body systems that facilitates and allows these various forms of movement to occur.
Consider the role of the contraction of the muscles during a marathon (muscular system), which receive messages to do so via the brain (neural system), which then pull on the leg bones to produce movement (skeletal system). These muscles use oxygen (respiratory system), which is delivered via blood from the heart (cardiovascular system), as well as glucose as a fuel for movement (digestive system). This movement will also stimulate the release of endorphins, which have positive effects on the brain and body (endocrine system).
Activity 1: Interrelationships Grid
Use your prior knowledge and learning to complete the body systems relationship summary sheet below by outlining how each system works together to create movement. You must provide a movement example and explicitly state how the systems work to create that movement.
Activity 2: Mind Map
Work in small groups using poster paper to create a mind map of the body systems and how they interact with one another and influence movement. Alternatively, use mindmeister.com to create a digital mind map.
To go further, add function terms to the arrows connecting two concepts to clearly show the relationship between them.
Then do a gallery walk and leave each other post-it notes of other items they could add to their mind maps or arrows of connectivity that were missed.

CUBE the following question. Then use your verb sheet and ALARM matrix to formulate a response.
Select one of the following movement contexts (or any other of personal interest):
• gymnastics floor routine
• ultra-endurance triathlon
• 100m sprint
• weightlifting
• boxing
• 1500m swimming race
• netball (Centre position).
Research and analyse the contribution and interaction between the seven body systems to help produce this movement. Include the physiological adaptations that occur in these body systems when this movement is regularly performed.
