On her website, Tokuda states: "I fell in love with ballet when I was at a young age." However, until she was ten years old, her city didn't have a ballet school. She says that her journey with ballet began as soon as a ballet school was opened in a nearby city. According to Tokuda, ballet has given her "a lifetime of amazing artistic experiences and personal challenges overcome."
In 2000, Tokuda moved from Japan to New York to study at the Joffrey ballet school. Since recieving her extensive dance education, she has danced with USA Ballet, Peoria Ballet, and Metropolitan Ballet. In addition, she spent seven years as the principal dancer for Continental Ballet. Alongside her faculty role at the Minnesota Dance Theatre, she has also taught master classes in both the United States and Japan.
