Context:
The Sami people are an ethnic group who live in Sámpi, an area spread out over Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Norway has a history of oppressing Sami culture, and although things are improving, change takes time. Elle Sofe Sara uses inspiration from traditional Sami dances and the movements of protesters, incorporating megaphones, shouting, and people standing together to represent the resilience of the group she wishes to protect and highlight. There are numerous examples of Sami protests throughout Norwegian history (some of the pictures are included in the slides), and unfortunately, they tend to be overlooked. This dance wishes to bring attention to these protests and let people know that change must come.
