As a dance group, Tariro aims to educate and empower young women and girls in Zimbabwean communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
"Tariro was founded in 2003 by two Mount Holyoke College alumnae, Memory Bandera and Jennifer Kyker, in order to address the particular needs of Zimbabwean teenaged girls. Young women are at the highest risk for contracting HIV, yet many non-profit organizations operating in Zimbabwe focus on younger children, leaving teenaged girls without the critical resources they need to obtain an education. In founding Tariro, Memory and Jennifer sought to redress this disparity by providing comprehensive educational support for teenaged girls to enable them to finish secondary school education." Tariro - "Hope"
Tariro is signifcant to the dance world as it combines women empowerment and dance together in order to combat the affects of HIV/AIDS in young women. Typically, dance performances focusing on the virus have dancers who are not affected, but Tariro interacts with young women directly impacted to regain their confidence and pursue an education
