Assignments
Assignments
There are two ways to find the assignments or homework in your Blackboard Ultra course. We'd like to suggest using Option 1, as your Professors have deliberately designed their course with an order and flow. Following this structure may lead to great success in the course.
Enter your course.
In Course Content, browse the page; assignments may be inside folders or learning modules.
Check one of these places:
Activity Stream: Look for new assignment alerts (overdue items appear in Important).
Calendar: Select the due date to open the assignment (if your instructor set one).
Grades or Activity pages: Open graded items with due dates from there.
Select the assignment title.
In Details & Information, note:
Due date and whether it has passed.
Attempts allowed (single/multiple).
Time limit (if any).
Goals and rubric (if provided).
Confirm whether any current or future submissions will be late.
Before opening or after starting the attempt, select This item is graded with a rubric.
Expand criteria to see achievement levels and plan your work accordingly.
(Optional) Keep the rubric open alongside the instructions as you complete the assignment.
You’ll see an alert: “This assessment will be graded anonymously. Don’t include personal information.”
Do not put your name in uploaded files or typed responses.
Your name is hidden from the grader; anonymous grading isn’t available for group assignments.
On the Grades page, you’ll see 'Not graded until grades are posted' (applies to each attempt if multiple attempts are allowed).
Enter the 6‑digit access code provided by your instructor/proctor.
Select Open to enter the assignment.
Re‑use the same code to resume a saved attempt (unless your instructor changes it; then request the new code).
If LockDown Browser is required, you must enter the correct access code before it launches.
From Course Content
Locate Assignment
Locate Details & Information, and confirm the time limit.
Select Start attempt → in the pop‑up, choose Start to begin the timer (or Cancel if not ready).
While the timer runs:
A countdown appears (at the top-left or bottom of the window).
Saving drafts or leaving the page does not stop the timer.
When the time is up, your work automatically submits.
If Prohibit Late Submissions is enabled, your work auto‑submits at the due date if you haven’t submitted.
Time‑remaining notifications
10 minutes–1 hour limit: One alert at 10% remaining.
≥1 hour limit: Alerts at 50% and 10% remaining.
No alerts if the limit is under 10 minutes or you have an unlimited‑time accommodation.
From Course Content
Locate Assignment
Select Start attempt.
Read instructions and begin work.
Not ready to submit? Select Save and Close to pause.
Return later and select Continue attempt to resume.
Submit when finished (see Submit an assignment below).
To resume: select Continue attempt (shows which attempt is in progress).
After using all attempts, select View submissions to review what you submitted.
After the due date, opening the assignment shows Late alerts:
In Details & Information, on the assignment page, and in the submit confirmation.
If enabled by your instructor, zeros may appear for missing work after the due date.
You can still submit if attempts remain; your Professor determines late penalties
In the Submission box:
Drag & drop files from your computer, or
Select the box to open the WYSIWYG editor, then use the paperclip (Attachment) to upload.
Auto‑save behavior:
Text you type: auto‑saves 2 seconds after you stop typing (essay fields also save every 10 seconds while typing).
A Last saved message confirms each auto‑save.
Connection issues:
If you see 'Connection lost,' don’t refresh or use the browser's back button. Check your connection.
If not restored in ~20 seconds, you’ll be warned that recent work wasn’t saved.
When reconnected, you’ll see Connection restored and your work auto‑saves again.
Preview & auto‑save:
Upload progress shows in a status window.
Files are previewed automatically at auto‑save or when you click outside the Submission box.
Adding a file just before a timed attempt expires: the upload completes before auto‑submit.
Formatting & accessibility:
Use editor tools to format text, embed images/media, and attach files.
On smaller screens, select the plus sign (+) to view additional options.
Keyboard: ALT + F10 (Windows) or Fn + ALT + F10 (Mac) to move focus to the toolbar; use arrow keys to choose options (e.g., numbered list).
Insert from Cloud Storage (optional):
Connect to OneDrive or Google Drive; uploaded files are copies (future changes in the cloud require a new upload).
If the browser supports it, cloud media can be displayed inline.
Conversations (if enabled) will let you post questions/comments visible to the class and the Professor.
Not Ready? You can "Save" for later.
Select Save and Close to pause. Your text, comments, and files remain on the page when you return.
Ready to Submit?
Confirm that you added content or answered at least one question (the Submit button activates only then).
Select Submit.
!!! Important: If you don’t select Submit, your Professor won’t receive your work.
Once you submit, you will see the confirmation panel. You can:
Note the date/time of submission.
Select View submission to review what you sent.
Copy and save the unique submission confirmation number for your records.
Attempts:
One attempt: You can’t edit after submitting.
Multiple attempts: Submissions made after the due date are marked as late; submissions made before the due date are not marked as late.
Assignments may be secured (Access Code, LockDown Browser).
Timers don’t pause when you navigate away; plan uploads accordingly.
Auto‑save helps, but avoid refreshing/back‑button during connection issues.
