For this subject Semester 1 & 2 are designed to be taken together. Semester 1 & 2 are different to each other.
Students may elect to study either or both semesters of this subject
This elective is suited to students with a keen interest in chemical sciences and is recommended for those intending to study VCE Chemistry or pursue careers in science, engineering or health-related fields. The course consolidates key chemical concepts from Year 10 while introducing new content from the VCE Chemistry Study Design. Emphasis is placed on developing practical and analytical skills, as well as scientific thinking and investigation.
Students will also be introduced to assessments in the same format as those used in the VCE Chemistry course.
Topics may include:
Properties of elements and the periodic table
Atomic structure and trends
Bonding models and how they relate to chemical properties
Polymerisation and the chemistry of large molecules
Classifying chemical reactions
Controlling chemical reactions (including catalysts)
This course supports students preparing for VCE Chemistry and links to a wide range of science and technology pathways at TAFE and university. It also builds core knowledge and practical skills essential for further studies in chemistry and related disciplines.
