“When they start burning books, they will start burning people.” Although the word Genocide is inextricably linked to the Holocaust and the diabolical events that took place during World War II it has a far deeper and more sinister history that goes way back in time and continues, sadly, to this day. Explore the concept of racial superiority going back to perhaps the world’s first deliberate act to eliminate a race, our own Tasmanian Indigenous population. Investigate the attitudes and misunderstandings that prevailed in Victorian times that lead to the justification of the slave trade and the attitude that certain sectors of our population were less worthy and intelligent than others. Learn about the Holocaust and more recent horrific events like the Rwandan Genocide and Cambodia’s Killing Fields. These events illustrate that whilst we, as a global community, cannot accept all humans with equal dignity and respect there will always be acts of atrocity.
