Course Description
This subject is recommended for all Year 10 students in order to support regular participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyles. This subject is also designed to be delivered across two semesters. Students are highly encouraged to choose this elective in both Semester 1 and 2.
Within the Year 10 Health and PE program students will study a range of topics. Specifically, for health students will assess, create and apply health information from credible sources to propose and justify responses to situations in the home, in the school and the community. Students will study community health and health promotion and critique its role in shaping their own and others’ health.
This elective provides opportunities for students to experience both theoretical and practical concepts related to health, wellbeing and physical activity. Physical activity opportunities include firstly exploring individual pursuits such as fitness training, weight training, pilates and yoga, dance, gymnastics and orienteering and their relationship with health and well-being. Students will design, implement and evaluate physical activity and fitness plans.
Students will also learn and develop strategies associated with team sports including building transferable movement skills, teamwork and strategic movement skills across a wide array of sports. This will also include evaluating movement and applying feedback to improve both their own and others performance. Coupled with this, students will focus on leadership and collaboration within learning in a team-based environment.
The health and well-being elements of the unit include the benefits of healthy lifestyles, investigating individual identities, impacts of identities on others, life transitions and changes and the impact on relationships. Students will also explore the support services available in the community.
