For this subject Semester 1 & 2 are designed to be taken together. Semester 1 & 2 are different to each other.
Students may elect to study either or both semesters of this subject
This elective is designed for students with a strong interest in the life sciences and is highly recommended for those considering VCE Biology or future study in the biological or health sciences. The course builds on key concepts from Year 10 Science while introducing foundational content and skills from the VCE Biology Study Design. Students will also develop their scientific investigation skills through research, experimental design, and data analysis, aligned with VCE Biology’s Key Science Skills.
Students will also be introduced to assessments in the same format as those used in the VCE Biology course.
Topics will be selected from the following,
Cell structure and function
Organelles and their roles
Human evolution and biological change over time
Enzymes and reaction control
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
DNA structure and function
Protein synthesis through transcription and translation
This subject is ideal preparation for VCE Biology and supports pathways into health, biomedical, environmental and agricultural sciences, as well as tertiary studies in biology-related fields. It also reinforces key Year 10 Science content while introducing VCE-style scientific language, thinking and investigation.
