This elective is primarily aimed at those students who are considering enrolling in Specialist maths at year 11 and 12. The course will consolidate core concepts taught in previous year levels. It will allow students to extend their range and understanding of areas covered in both basic and extended mathematical concepts and problem solving along with the use of technology to solve mathematical problems. There will be opportunities for student to apply their mathematical skills to different types of applications and to become familiar with the new CAS (Computer Algebra Systems) calculators.
Arithmetic and Number – Number systems and Recursion.
Geometry, measurement and Trigonometry – Geometry and Proof.
Graphs of functions – Various non-linear functions
Modelling and problem solving
Highly recommended for students who may be interested in engineering or ICT/mathematical pathways.
Consolidates core curriculum from Year 10 Maths and provides introductory extension studies in skills and concepts important for VCE Maths.
Problem solving will constitute a substantial part of this elective, enabling students to broaden their understanding of the practical applications of mathematical skills and concepts.
Students will be encouraged to use technology to assist with higher level mathematical problem solving.
Scientific and CAS calculator.
