Access to Specialized Campus Software

There are several ways to acquire software for your Smith owned or personally owned computer. There is direct download, the Apple App Store, the ITS SmithSoftware webpage and through the Self Service application for Macs.

Self Service and the ITS SmithSoftware webpage is only available while on campus unless you have installed the Pulse Secure VPN client.

To view a full list of available applications and their download instructions, please visit the Computing and Technical Services (CATS) Software for Ongoing Science Classes page.

We are also providing access to software via AppStream. AppStream is a cloud-hosted application virtualization platform that allows end-users to run Windows-based applications through a web browser.

Examples of software currently available through AppStream include: AutoCAD, Solidworks, ArcGIS, Matlab, SPSS, Stata, Chemdraw, Starry Night, and Kaleidagraph. If you have software that you would like to be made available to your students remotely or you would just like to try it out and see how AppStream works please contact CATS.

I am going to be working with protected data and personal information. What do I need to do to ensure my laptop, desktop, tablets, and phone are secure?

If you will be working with protected institutional information while off campus (this includes personal identity information, such as Social Security number, state drivers license ID number, or other government issued ID number; financial account numbers; or credit/debit card numbers), please review the following:

  • Protected data MAY NOT BE downloaded to or stored on a non-Smith device.

  • Any device that you use to work with/access this data must meet the following criteria:

      • Have the most recent version of the device’s operating system, and routinely have patches and updates installed.

      • Require authentication when restarting or waking from sleep mode.

      • Enable a screensaver that requires a password to resume work.

      • An up-to-date web browser.

      • Have local device storage encryption enabled. If you have questions about this, please contact ithelp@smith.edu.
