Get ready for Spring 2025!  Learning, Research & Technology is offering a series of faculty workshops from January 13-24, and sessions will be offered both in-person and online. Workshop topics include setting up your course in Moodle, accessibility & universal design, AI tools and policies, classroom technology orientation drop-in sessions, one-on-one pedagogical consultations, and more.

12/12/2024 - Moodle: Gradebook (In-Person Session)

Thursday, December 12, 2:00PM to 3:30PM, In-Person (Neilson 011 Ground Floor) 

Bring your syllabus and let's look at your Moodle Gradebook! In this workshop, we'll cover common grading schemes and entering grades, how to set up grade calculation, and offer tips for simplifying the grading process.

Special Program

Apply by January 8, 2025 - Faculty AI Cohort

Sponsored by the Committee on Educational Technology, this program supports faculty in exploring the impacts of AI tools on teaching and learning for one of their Spring 2025 courses. Participants in the Faculty AI Cohort will meet monthly during the spring semester, partner with the Learning Research & Technology team to design a digital project for one of their Spring 2025 courses, and will receive a $400 research grant at the completion of the program.

Apply to the CET Faculty AI Grant Program by January 8, 2025.

Schedule a 30-minute pedagogical consultation with a member of Learning, Research & Technology to answer quick questions, reflect on your teaching needs and discuss tools/technologies for your spring 2024 course. Please note that these consultations are brief, and therefore intended for last-minute or quick questions. If you are looking for support that requires more time, please submit a digital request and we can schedule a consultation with a longer duration.

Moodle is Smith's Learning Management System (LMS) and recommended for use as your course “home base,” a destination for sharing readings, resources, and other course materials with students. In this workshop, we will review Moodle's basic functions, including tools, options, and navigation of the Moodle interface. This course is recommended for new faculty or anyone who would like a Moodle refresher.

Moodle Assignments provide instructors with the ability to collect student work within one single activity and to provide feedback. In this workshop, we will review how to set up an assignment, how to use Moodle's grading functions, and how to download the files and upload them once they have been graded.

Ever wondered whether your slide presentations are effectively designed? In this workshop, well be covering how you can improve your class slides using simple, yet effective, design techniques. As these techniques go beyond your preferred tool, Google Slides, Keynote, or PowerPoint users are welcome to join us.

1/21/2025 - Getting Started With Spatial Storytelling (In-Person)

StoryMaps integrate maps into larger visual and textual narratives, require no previous mapmaking experience, and contribute to the growing interest in publicly-facing scholarship. This workshop will walk participants through the process of creating a basic ArcGIS StoryMap. We will show examples of StoryMaps that deliver instruction and ones that communicate research findings, along with assignments in which students create StoryMaps.

Learn about accessibility resources, pedagogical best practices for accessibility (including how to make videos accessible), and what tools Smith has available. Facilitators will cover accessible instructional materials, principles that can be applied in various learning settings, and best practices for online course materials.

Are you interested in engaging your students in digital scholarship, such as producing a podcast, building a website, creating a visualization with geospatial data, or composing a digital narrative? This session will introduce you to the Learning Research & Technology team and the Spatial Analysis Lab, share examples of past digital projects created by Smith Faculty, and introduce you to resources and technology available in Neilson Library, Alumnae Gym, and Sabin-Reed.
