New to Smith

Welcome to Smith! The following guidance will help you get your technology needs underway during your first few days.

Information Technology Services (ITS) Locations

ITS User Support Center - Seeley Hall B8

Central Service Point - Neilson Library, ground floor, Central Hall

IT Services (ITS) - Stoddard Hall at 23 Elm St, Northampton MA 01063.

Smith ID (OneCard)

Your OneCard is proof that you are a part of the Smith community. It allows you to access several things on campus, including printers, library services, dining services, and certain buildings (like the gym and tennis courts).

To get your OneCard, submit your photo online, then email ithelp@smith.edu to set up an appointment. Make sure your photo meets Smith OneCard requirements.

If you need to replace your OneCard, please email ithelp@smith.edu to request a new card and set up an appointment to pick it up.

Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Smith uses Duo Two-Factor Authentication to add an additional layer of security to Smith accounts. All Smith staff, faculty, and students are required to set up a Duo account.

Please visit the Duo Two Factor Authentication page for information on setting up your account.

Computers and Other Technology Setup

Most offices come with a standard setup (desktop computer, keyboard, mouse). You should work with your manager, supervisor, or department to identify any additional technology needs you may have.

Individual departments are responsible for purchasing technology outside of the standard setup. Email cstore@smith.edu or ithelp@smith.edu for assistance with technology recommendations and ordering.

Network Connectivity

Smith supports both wired and wireless connections to the Smith network. Under normal operating conditions, the Connect2Smith wireless network provides convenient wireless access and is the recommended network.

Wireless Access (Wi-Fi)

Eduroam is a useful wireless network if you anticipate traveling to other institutions and want to securely connect to their eduroam network with no extra steps. Learn how to set up and connect your device(s) by following the instructions on the TARA website.

Wired Access (Ethernet)

If you are new to Smith and think you need a wired connection in your office, please email ithelp@smith.edu.

Computer Operating Systems and Updates

While it may seem like a simple thing to do, please do not automatically update Smith-owned devices to new operating systems as soon as the update releases. ITS runs security tests on all new operating systems after their release and will make an announcement when it is secure to update.

Telephones

Your office will be equipped with an Avaya telephone. We recommend watching the Avaya Telephone Overview instructional video, which reviews the features and functions of the campus telephones.

You will need to set up your voicemail. Please see Using the Avaya Voicemail Messaging System on the TARA website for detailed instructions.

You can also access your work phone from a mobile device through the Avaya Workplace Mobile App. The app allows you to place and receive calls on your personal device using your campus extension.
