Creating & Organizing Items

Overview

The Gradebook setup page lists all the grade items in an outline format. The order of items on this page determines the order when viewed on the Grader Report, and when students view their grades. Through making changes on the Gradebook setup page, instructors can change the order of items in the gradebook, create custom grade items not linked to an activity, and create categories to group similar items together. This page also controls how the Course total column will be calculated.

To begin organizing the items in the gradebook, go to the Gradebook Setup page. From the main course page, select Grades at the top of the page. This will open the Grader Report view. Select the drop-down menu next to Grader report then select Gradebook setup.

Add Categories

Categories are used for grouping similar items together in the gradebook. To add a category:

The new category will display with a folder icon and a subtitle row to combine scores for items in the category. Initially the category will display a total of “0” because the category is empty.

Move Grade Items

The order of items on the Gradebook setup page will determine how they display in the gradebook. Items can be either moved individually, or multiple items at a time.

Add a custom grade item

Custom grade items can be added to the gradebook from the Gradebook setup page. These items are not linked to a course activity and can be used as an additional way to record a grade and feedback for a student without them submitting an assignment.

Please note, if you want a student to submit work for a grade, you should add an Assignment activity instead.

To add a custom grade item:

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save changes. The Gradebook setup page will open and the new item will be at the bottom.

Edit Grade Item or Category Settings

Grade item settings under Actions, edit settings

To change a grade item or category, from the Gradebook setup page, select Actions > Edit > Edit Settings to access and change the settings.

If there’s a grade item connected to an activity, you can change the name and maximum points by going back to your main course page and editing the activity’s settings.
