Duo Authentication - New Phone, Different Phone Number

Text Instructions

If your new phone has a different number than the one you previously added to Duo, you will need to use your secondary device to authenticate with Duo before you can add your new phone. If you do not have a secondary device saved, email ithelp@smith.edu to get a one-time authentication code.

  1. Go to any website that requires a Smith login (e.g. the Smith Portal or Workday).

  2. When you get the Duo prompt, select My Settings and Devices from the options on the left. Note: If Duo was set to “remember me for 30 days” and skips the Duo page, you can make it appear by using a different browser, a private window, or an incognito window in Chrome.

  1. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the Duo page to swap to your secondary device. If you do not have a secondary device saved, email ithelp@smith.edu to get a one-time authentication code.

  1. Authenticate with your secondary device or the one-time authentication code sent from ITS. Duo will take you to the My Settings and Devices screen.

  2. Select Device Options next to the old phone number.

  1. Select the red trash icon to delete the old number.

  2. Select Add a new device from the options on the left.

  1. Follow the prompts to select the type of phone, add the new phone number, and link your phone to the Duo app (if you are using a smartphone).
