Her heart betrayed what she would hide, The secrets of her soul, A love she feared, a love unwise, A love beyond control. Her words and deeds had never slipped. Her mate could find no fault, And yet his eyes accused and said He knew about it all. About the dreams, about the hopes, Of which he was not part, About a man who was not him, A man who had her heart. She tried to keep it all inside, And live her life aright, No matter what she dreamed and hoped Through days and tortured nights. But though she gave him all she could, Her mate, he wanted more, He wanted to control her dreams, To make their love secure. She tried. She cried. She willed her heart to keep its place, To hold no thought impure, To let her sleep a dreamless sleep, To make their love secure. But all she did was not enough, To keep the secrets in. They came again in darkest night, And made her dream of sin. They made her tense, which he misread As signs of acts, not dreams, Which led to fights with bitter words, And slamming doors and screams. Which made her dreaming sweeter still, And led to still more fights, Until she left to find some peace, Which made him sure he’s right. I do not know what happened next, If either one did win, But I do know the lesson here — You can’t keep secrets in. For what you feel, and what you fear, And who you really love, Are written on your face to read, As bright as stars above. So I would urge you speak the truth, To those who make you whole, Before your heart betrays itself, And secrets of your soul.
