God and the Devil

God and the Devil fought for her soul Leaving her lost and confused Each had some virtues and each had some faults But neither had shown her the Truth Truth serves no master, not Devil, not God Truth will bend to no will Truth may bring pleasure, more often brings pain But Truth was what called to her still Challenging Devil and challenging God, She asked them to show her the Way To walk with no master, to bend to no will But to hear what the Truth had to say. The Devil spoke gently of easier lives Of Ways to do right without pain Of Ways to seek pleasure and bring no-one harm Never to lose, but to gain God did not lie, but bowed to the Truth That life would sometimes be hard That pain would be common and Death comes too soon And none could assure a reward And laughing she rose to embrace her sweet Lord To accept the gifts that He gave Of living with risk of losing it all For the chance that it all would be gained God and the Devil had fought for her soul In the end, neither had won But God was still with her The Devil was gone And her soul blazed with the fire of Truth The fire which showed her the Way
