Cold War Project

We spent last week looking at the foundations of the Cold War and talking about various tactics and examples of containment. (The materials from last week are all linked here.) This week, you - and one other person, if you'd like - will spend Tuesday and Block looking into a place where the Cold War was fought.

Options for countries to research:

  • Congo
  • Angola
  • Chile
  • Nicaragua
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia and Somalia
  • Indonesia

What you'll be researching:

  • Context of the conflict: when it began, what caused it, etc
  • Local group #1 in the conflict: name, leader(s), goals, tactics, etc
  • Local group #2 in the conflict: name, leader(s), goals, tactics, etc
    • Additional groups as needed - some countries have more than 2 groups contesting for power.
  • US role in the conflict: who did they support, what did they provide their side, etc
  • Soviet (USSR) role in the conflict: who did they support, what did they provide their side, etc
    • Other countries' roles in the conflict (as needed): who did they support, what did they provide their side, etc
  • Resolution of the conflict: short term, who 'won'? What was the impact of this victory?
  • Long term impact of the conflict
