68th Resolution

Resolution of Gratitude - 68th Meeting of the Virginia Philosophical Association

The Virginia Philosophical Association, assembled on the campus ofVirginia Wesleyan College on October 26th and 27th, 2007, endorse the following resolution, and direct the secretary to dispatch it promptly to the College through its President, William Greer, and the chair of its Philosophy Department, Larry Hultgren:

WHEREAS, the weather was perfect for philosophizing,

AND WHEREAS, many profound thoughts were acquired but as many and as good were left for others,

AND WHEREAS, the overlapping consensus is that philosophical conversation in a convivial atmosphere realizes valuable human capabilities and is, perhaps, even a human right;

AND WHEREAS, philosophy is a family of ways of living and of assessing life in which beliefs rationally arrived at are the foundation of practice;

AND WHEREAS, our desires, though not all of our temporary eruptive motivational states, do give us reasons to act in certain ways;

AND WHEREAS, each speaker was kind enough to express himself or herself in such a way that access to the coded notebooks was not necessary;

AND WHEREAS, we claim no infallible supreme authority nor a passionate concern with outsiders;

AND WHEREAS, though suspicious of giftedness as a concept we are grateful for all actual gifts;

AND WHEREAS, no bystanders were harmed for the sake of our amusements;

Be it therefore resolved that the Virginia Philosophical Association expresses its appreciation to Virginia Wesleyan College and the faculty of the Department of Philosophy for their hospitality in hosting the Association's 68th meeting.

The above motion was presented by the Association’s secretary [Duncan Richter] and approved by acclamation of the membership on the 27th day of October, 2007.
