Five-Year Phased Plan for Moto Ondoso Reduction
Our final deliverable for this project will be a complete, 5-year plan for the reduction of moto ondoso in Venice across all types of transportation. This includes public (Alilaguna, ACTV), taxi (motoscafi), and cargo transportation. Our plan will introduce several steps to reduce moto ondoso in the short-, medium-, and long-term. It will allow the Venetian government to review these steps and implement them slowly as time goes, as large amounts of sudden change typically aren't taken very well.
Four Boat Hulls Reviewed and Updated
As part of the proposal, boat hulls for the four primary boat types will be reviewed and modified to better fit the canals of Venice. The boat types are as follows: cargo (mototopo), taxi (motoscafo), ACTV (vaporetto), and Alilaguna.
A Method for Scaling Interscambio Merci Rent Based on Efficiency
A method for collecting and processing efficiency data from cargo boats will be developed to create incentives to drive more efficiently. This method will be based around GPS trackers implanted on cargo boats, with data broken down to measure boat efficiency based on distance traveled and speed. This data is then taken, plugged into equations to turn it into an efficiency index, and then the total efficiency computed. A final equation will then be made to scale the 500.000€ rent based on this value.
More Efficient Travel between Cruise Ships and S. Marco
Currently, large, private double-decker ships ensure the ferrying of passengers from cruise ships to S. Marco. Smaller single-decker ships also do occasional rounds picking up smaller amounts of passengers. A large issue is that these boats often go back and forth between the areas without being full. A method for unifying and reducing the number of ships required to ferry these passengers around will be developed in order to reduce the global moto ondoso produced by these passengers.
Evaluation of Taxi Sharing Feasibility
Motoscafi, or the speed-boats which act as water-taxis in Venice, are one of the large contributors of moto ondoso. Their hulls are made for high-speed travel which they never reach, and they are rarely full. One of the ways to solve this is by using taxi sharing, which increases the number of people which use taxis, thus filling the boats, moving more people around in one trip, and providing taxi drivers with an increased source of income from people who would not typically take a taxi and would now be willing to. A study on the feasibility of such a system, especially on the tourist's side, has never been performed. Tourists will be interviewed in order to determine how much the taxi would have to be in order to make them more likely to take it over other types of transportation, along with how much they'd be willing to wake and what levels of complexity they'd be willing to go through.
Images and Infographics
As part of this report, many images and inforgraphics will be created to illustrate the issue of moto ondoso in the canals. Images may be used to showcase the various types of boats, the state of canal walls, or to illustrate some step of the report. Infographics will help breakdown complex ideas or topics in a way that makes more intuitive sense of the issue. The below graphic breaks-down the various categories and influences of moto ondoso.
