In 2007, the city of Venice installed a city-wide surveillance system called ARGOS. The city installed surveillance cameras on the tops of the buildings surrounding the canals in order to record boat traffic within that area. The cameras can also calculate speed and position of their targets and detects predefined events. We could use this surveillance system to track the number of times boats pass through certain canals, identify problematic areas in the canals, and help find alternative routes and shortcuts for boat traffic. ARGOS has also been collecting data for the city since it was first installed, so we could potentially use that data in our Methodology.
