This past week, the Wakes team has entered the beginning stages of writing the IQP proposal. Much of the work done this week dealt with structuring our paper so that further writing in the future will have flow. We created the project title, Preventing Canal Wall Degradation: Solving the Issue of Wake in Venice, as we all thought it best summed up what our primary objectives are.
Meeting together this week, we refined our project objections based on our mission statement and the comments that Professors Carrera and Higgins had given us. Our objectives for reducing moto ondoso involve re-visiting the cargo delivery system, continuing data collection from past years, and exploring other ways of reducing wakes and using the combination of these to create a five-year, multi-pronged plan for reducing motor wakes. Earlier in the week, our current objectives were not clear because we were trying to create one single solution for the three different boating industries to decrease moto ondoso. We later determined that having a three-part solution that addressed each of the three main contributors to motor wakes.
We also began work on the background chapter, outlining it so that the information would have proper flow and timing. The background chapter is meant to inform the reader of the ongoing damage to the Venetian canal walls due to moto ondoso and how the various boating systems in Venice operate. We also touched upon the previous work done for the canals, both WPI IQP teams and efforts made by the city. We will be expanding on each of the points in the outline when further we are further down the writing process and we may possibly add more information if we deem necessary.
Our team still has much to do in preparation for working in Venice. These first steps to structure our project has helped us get a better idea of how we are going to work on these problems in the future as well as helped brainstorm some other areas for investigation. We have much more writing in the week to come, and we will also work to get in contact with Piero Toffolo and Tomaso Minelli, as well as the boat manufacturer Gregorio Giogetti. Until next week!
