Up until this point, I had not much understood or looked into one of the most basic aspects of this project, and that is the exact physical specifications of the boats we are working with. After researching more about public transportation boats, I learned a lot about just how big they are. First of all, the municipal fleet of boats is operated by the company ACTV, consisting of 160 water buses. These water buses dock into 150 floating piers along the channels and transport over 100 million passengers annually. The water buses are powered by diesel-based watercraft propulsion technology. A vaporetto ("small steamer") is 24 meters long, has a 4.22 meter wide hull, displaces 37 tons of water, and accommodates 200 passengers. It has a single rudder propelled by a 147-kW marine diesel ICE, and services for 16 hours daily.
Although this data may not seem extremely important, it gives the team a better idea of the actual size of the boats which we are working with. Until this, it was my best guess of how large the boat was. I now have a better picture and therefore can better understand, analyze, and develop solutions to the problem of moto ondoso.
