This past weekend, we helped another team perform people counts at the Rialto Bridge. Our team was in charge of counting the people coming in and out of the two boat stops. It rained the entire day, but the data was interesting. At one boat stop, very few people got on the boat, but many got off. The other boat stop was the opposite, few people got off the boat, but many people got on. The day was a success overall.
On Sunday we performed our Cruise Ship counts. Two of our team members were positioned on the island of Guidecca with binoculars. Two Cruise Ships came into the port around 9 o’clock. When they started to disembark, the two students would record what the boats looked like coming out of the port, along with the license plate number. They then texted this information to the other two students who were at the San Marco port. To our surprise, only two of the many boats actually docked at the San Marco port. The two students counted 91 and 110 people getting off from these double deckers. We will conduct further research to understand where the rest of the people went.
We spent the rest of this week finishing up the hull designs. We finished the shells of the current and new taxi, cargo and Alilaguna. From here, we will begin to run them through Maxsurf to get the hydrostatic parameters of the boat. We will also begin to create the superstructures for each boat so they can be easily identified as their respective boat type.
The last thing we did this week was finalize the survey questions to ask tourists about taxi sharing. We tried to make the questions as specific and straight forward as possible. We needed to keep the questions short because we know that it will be difficult to ask strangers to answer our questions. We will submit these questions to our advisors for their approval.
We look forward to next week, and are excited to see our project come together.
