Tullahought

Tullahought, Tulach Dhocht, the difficult hill. Area 212 acres.

The derivation of the name is in doubt. It is recorded in the Red Book of Ossory as Inylhaghta and in the Ordnance Survey Letters as Tulach Dhocht, a difficult hill. The roadway here is certainly steep with a dangerous turning. The ancient church stood in Tullahought village. Power’s public house was built on the site, according to local information, and the main road runs through the old churchyard. Tobar Mhuire, Our Lady’s Well, was closed by large flags and a house built over it which Carrigan records happening in 1845. the Church field is on top of the hill and there is a high mound with a large number of upright stones some distance from the church. There is a small rath near the cross-roads not far from the Kilmacoliver border and fields are Bán Ard and Ráirc na Lao.
