Tidy Towns Story

The Tidy Towns story commenced in Tullahought in 1991 when the then Parish Priest Fr. Robert Raftice P.P. entered the village in the National Tidy Towns Competition. Its inclusion saw both villages in the parish Windgap and Tullahought entered together in the Competition for the first time.

Following the adjudicators report that awarded the Village 114 points it was well behind the field Nationally and within County Kilkenny,

As a result a committee was formed and a plan of work arranged for the 1992 Competition. In the interim the village has been transformed through ongoing major works that included

    • The Development of Crokes Well

    • The Building of the Viewing Tower "Túr Amharc"

    • The restoration of the Village Forge

    • The Provision of Street Lighting

    • The Creation of a Wildlife Area including two lakes

    • The rebuilding of almost all the stone walls and piers within the village

    • The erection of Village Signs, Finger Posts and the provision of Flower Beds

    • The Opening of the "Kilmacoliver Loop Walk"

    • Provision of an Amenity Area at Kearns Bridge

    • The unveiling of the Quern Stone Sculpture at the Wildlife Area.

    • The Creation of a 1916 Commemorative Garden
