It is true that no one was to know the day or the hour but once he came it was no longer a secret. It is like a surprise birthday party. The person who is going to have the birthday has no idea that there is going to be a party or the day or the hour, but after the party they know what the day and hour was. It was to be no surprise to the church only to the wicked. This is because Jesus and his disciples told the church exactly what would happen right before the coming would take place. Luke said the abomination of desolation would be soldiers surrounding Jerusalem. He said when that happened to flee the city and if you're in the field to flee for the desolation therefore is nigh. 1 Thessalonians 5:6-
5 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober
This shows that the wicked wouldn't be expecting the coming of the Lord, but the saints would be expecting his coming and know by the signs the approximate time and be expecting him. It makes no sense for Christians to believe that they were expecting Jesus to literally be coming in a literal cloud and that was why they were to keep watching. It does make sense though to believe they were expecting to see soldiers to surround Jerusalem and to get out of the city and that is why they were watching. If they missed that and the other signs that Jesus told them to watch for, then they would have been killed when the armies (ROMAN) destroyed Jerusalem, the people who had murdered Christ and His new covenant saints. This happened during the 3 1/2-year tribulation from around 66 1/2 -70 A.D. The first 3 1/2 years was when Jesus preached the new covenant from 26 1/2 - 30 A.D. until he was cut off (killed) in the midst of the week. Jesus gave them one generation (40 Years) from 30 A.D.- 70 A.D. to preach the gospel to the Jews first and then the gentiles. there was a remnant of Jews that believed. His new covenant people Jew and Gentile in one body, escaped Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and went to the city called Pella. you can read this account by the Historian Josephus, which is also the name of the book. Forgive me for me title. I needed a way to get futurist to read this Article. I am a preterist of course
