TOYOTA S-2 804cc (Supercharged 2-Stroke Engine)
Experimental compact, 2-stroke, 2-cylinder gasoline engine made of aluminum. Valves in the cylinder heads replace traditional crankcase scavenging and prevent oil and fuel from mixing; improving combustion and preventing sparkplug fouling. Exhaust resistance is reduced with multiple exhaust valves and supercharger-forced scavenging. Direct injection of the fuel into the cylinders also prevents unburned fuel from entering the exhaust. A new lightweight exhaust system combines exhaust manifold, muffler and catalytic converter into a single unit, improving scavenging and greatly reducing noise. Installed in the ultralight aluminum Toyota AXV-IV Experimental Vehicle which debuted at the 1991 Frankfurt Motor Show.
