Pictorial History
1975
The Soaring Club of Houston(SCOH) was founded in June of 1975. Founding members include Jim Lovell (first president), Story Musgrave (tow pilot in his own Citabria), Marsha Ivans(CFIG) and Eduardo Iglesias(Only founding member still active at SCOH).
1975-1980
First Location: Skylakes Airport now named "Skydive Houston" located just south of Waller.
The club moved to "Cypress Field"(north-west of the town of Cypress, north of highway 290 near the present-day Fairfield subdivision).
The club moved back to Skylakes and remained until it moved to Hempstead.

The only water supply on the field was a rain water drained off the hangar roof into a cistern. A well was drilled in the early 1980s.
Hempstead
1981-1995
After the move to Hempstead, the club grew rapidly adding both members and equipment.
In 1982, SCOH and the other Houston glider club hosted the SSA Soaring Convention in the downtown Houston convention center.
By 1990 the club membership topped 100.
The Hempstead operation worked well but the land use was on a month to month basis.
A search for a permanent home begun in early 1990.

SCOH buys their own piece of property(current location) north of Waller. This view is looking east before the property was cleared and graded.
The first tow from the new field was in 1995 when Bill Campbell launched the 2-33 from the freshly graded runway.

SCOH moved to the current location north of Waller, TX in 1996.

Now the club would remain in control of the property so club and privately owned hangars could be built with confidence.
Building the tow plane hangar(pictured to the left) became a club project with many members climbing scaffolding and installing a seemingly endless number of nuts and bolts. It was the event that symbolized our becoming a club family.
2000
2000 was a challenging year
A tornado or very strong downburst from a thunderstorm destroyed the club's glider hangars and totaled or severely damaged the entire club glider fleet. The tow plane hangar protected the tow planes.
The events in the summer of 2000 caused a temporary slump in membership.
Thanks to efforts of a core group of members club equipment was either restored or replaced and new hangars were professionally designed and constructed.
