Sea caving on the Causeway Coast, Jock, Rick, Emma and Al

After the usual faff tastic - we are leaving at half 9 in the morning I swear to God antics we arrived up at the giants causeway by around 3 in the afternoon.

The plan being to attempt a swim into Dunkerry cave to figure out if the legend of unfathomable lengths was indeed just a legend. After a bit of a nosey we decided that access to Dunkerry proper was going to be slightly more involved that first though so we opted for a more accessible shallower looking option on down the coast.

I think this beast is called Leckilroy cave and as far as I know it has been seldom visited in our generation (if ever). Hopefully this would prove a good training mission before committing to Dunkerry proper.

Suited and booted Al belayed me out along a traverse ledge on the right hand side of the entrance as we all kept one eye on the cave entrace and one eye out to sea. The swell wasn't exactaly helpful so I swam in for the first few meters before gaining my feet and getting a bit bashed about for my efforts. Not long after I ran out of rope in view of a raised boulder beach at the end of water. Suffice to say I was glad of the safety line when it came to hauling my ass back out through the white horses.

We added another 20 meters of rope and Rick and Al went in as a pair. They successfully managed to swim/crawl/scramble to the raised beach at the end about 100 meters into the cave. No unfathomable lengths for further exploration but they did seem to had a similarly fun time hauling their asses back out through the soup.

We managed to attract a bit of a crowd on the cliff top and the PSNI helicopter done a fly by so we made our escape and stopped off for alook at the beautiful (dry) Protcoon and Larrybane Caves on the way home

Fantastic introduction to sea caving but Dunkerry still awaits.
