Ramsdons and Carrickbeg,

Jock, Emma, Roisin, Tony, Steve Muh, Artur, Una, Eoghan, Pavel

Due to lack of students the planned queens trip ended up as a slightly more adventurous Shannon Group weekend. Friday night festivities kicked off on the hoo, the highlight being an hour long conversation about peeing in wetsuits, beware of borrowed wetsuits people! The next day a traumatic search for a fry in Blacklion concluded with plans hatched to split into two groups...

Tony, Steve, Pavel and Artur went to add more scaff to Carrick Beg. Myself, Emma, Roisin, Una and Eoghan went off to look for Ramsdons Pot in Leitrim.

Ramsdons (Saturday 13th - about 3 hours)

We found Ramsdoms relatively easily. (Take the road up past the waterfall walk just outside Rossinver. Drive until you reach a grassy track on the left with a gate that looks more like a fence just after the edge of the forest. Follow the grassy/bumpy road all the way to the top of the Darty hills. Ramsdons lies to the north about 5 minutes walk from the car. There are a number of pots on the area but Ramsdons is by far and away the largest and most distinctive. After a couple of abortive rigging attempts Eoghan, Una and Emma fecked off to Garrison for food and Rugby while Roisin and I finally decided to drop the pitch. The pitch is best descended from the left hand side as you face back towards the car park. An old bolt just over the rim of the main descent needs replaced. Without this bolt we protected the rope over the edge as best we could with a tackle bag.

The pitch itself is pretty straight forward and very scenic (if not rather loose). We were about a meter short with the rope which caused us more hassle when trying to exit than on the way down. The main day light chamber and sparkle off the waterfall is pretty Alum esk (but smaller). At the bottom of the pitch the main lead lies under the largest obvious boulder. Everything moved in here including the floor. Its all very loose but this must be the way down to the ICC extension and lower waterfall chamber. It could be re-opened as a fairly easy dig but we will need to bring a couple more bodies, a crowbar and poking sticks.

On the way out a bit of faffing and dodgy cherty climbing was required to reach the end of the rope and a careful ascent amongst random falling rocks seen us to the surface. We derigged just in time for the others to return and headed across to Boho to join DCU and TJ for another evenings festivities.
