Scorpi of SCOD - 2007 Interview Text

SCOD Scorpion Speaks: Homeless Memories (part1 Travel)

This is a non-fiction biographical interview with a homeless orphan who made a life for himself as a young-man. He was a victim of abuse and the failures of our system, but he did not turn to crime, drugs, or hypocrisy. Instead he found friends, work, and places to live. Finally after gaining some acceptance in the community, he found a home in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He is now 24 years-old and affords his own apartment. (2007)

PART 1 Travel : Scorpi was born in Seattle, Washington to a mother that could not take care of him, and he was given to foster homes. At the age of 18 he went to live in Las Vegas, Nevada; after training with Job Corp. Ended up on the streets because of hostile living conditions, he found himself homeless. Later he joined the Carnival & went to San Antonio, Texas. Then he hitchhiked to New York City, NY; living in subways.

“I am from Seattle Washington. Here I am in Harpers Ferry, and I'm actually enjoying it.”

“Some of the shelters are pretty friendly, a lot of Christian groups come by and feed the homeless.”

“Hitch-hiking can be very dangerous, it is not safe; if you are going to do it be careful.”

“New York wasn't that bad, nice city.”

PART 2 GOVERNMENT : Scorpion gives his views on the American homeless situation and the government's role regarding aid.

“Homelessness is the governments fault, they cut back on jobs, it's fuck'n ridiculous. Certain states really crack down on homeless, what are we supposed to do? I have been on food-stamps. Well-fare is helpful. Sometimes I got good food. If I won the Lottery...I would get homeless people together and build a shelter with job research to help them out. About politics, we need a Democrat in office. We need more money put towards social services, seems like they don't put much effort into it. We gotta find something better than War."

PART 3: ADVICE: Since joining SCOD he has also joined the local Odd Fellow Lodge (IOOF). At 24 years old, he works two jobs and rents an apartment.

“Advice for anyone who finds themselves homeless: Look for people willing to help, do not sit there and do nothing. It can be scary. I found out where to eat, sleep, and work. I learned how to 'fly a sign', be careful asking for money. Police are there to help with tough love. I was on the Brooklyn subway when I heard a gun go off. Why is that some people scatter when they here Gunshots, and some remain cool? It's weird. Sometimes I want to go back on the road. Friendship (& Respect) are the most important; without it, you cant get anywhere! I am happy I am on my feet, and got it together.”
