छायामन्यस्य कुर्वन्ति | तिष्ठन्ति स्वयमातपे |
फलान्यपि परार्थाय | वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषाः इव ||
chAyAmanyasya kurvanti tishThanti svayamAtape
phalAnyapi parArthAya vrukshAh satpurushAh iva
They give shade to others while they themselves stand in the sun. Even fruits they bear are for the benefit of others. Trees are like good people.
पुस्तकेषु च या विद्या परहस्ते च यद्धनम् |
समये तु परिप्राप्ते न सा विद्या न तद्धनम् ||
pustakeshu cha yA vidyA parahaste cha yaddhanam |
samaye tu pariprApte na sA vidyA na taddhanam ||
Meaning: Knowledge in the form of a book is not knowledge. Money in the hands of others is not money. Because, knowledge in a book and money with others is not useful for you when you need it. You need to gain the knowledge and earn the money so that it can help you when you need it in the future.
जीवितं यः स्वयं चेच्छेत् कथं सोsन्यं प्रघातयेत् l
यदयदात्मनि चेच्छेत् तत्परस्यापि चिन्तयेत् ll
jeevitam yah svayam chechchhet katham sonyam praghaatayet l
yadayadaatmani chechchhet tatparasyaapi chintayet ll
Meaning: How can one – who himself wants to live – kill another? Can he not perceive his feelings in others too? One should think about others’ desires in the same manner as he desires for himself.
व्यायामात् लभते स्वास्थ्यं दीर्घायुष्यं बलं सुखम् ।
आरोग्यं परमं भाग्यं स्वास्थ्यं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥
vyaayaamaat labhate svaasthyam deerghaayuShyam balam sukham
aarogyam paramam bhaagyam svaasthyam sarvaarthasaadhanam
Regular exercise gives you good health, longevity, strength and happiness. Health is the biggest wealth. It is the key to every success.
गङ्गा पापं शशी तापं दैन्यं कल्पतरुस्तथा ।
पापं तापं च दैन्यं च घ्नन्ति सन्तो महाशयाः ॥

Ganga removes the sins of human beings. The moon takes away the fatigue caused by the heat of the Sun. The Kalpataru, the divine tree in Swarga loka, takes away the poverty of the humans. However, people of noble souls, removes the sins, fatigue and poverty .
आलस्यं हि मनुष्याणां शरीरस्थो महारिपुः |
नास्त्युद्यमसमो बन्धुः कृत्वा यं नावसीदति ||

अक्रोधेन जयेत् क्रोधमसाधुं साधुना जयेत् |
जयेत् कदर्यं दानेन जयेत् सत्येन चानृतम् ||
Anger can be overcome by remaining cool (by not retaliating) and wickedness by kindness. Miserly behavior can be overcome by giving away wealth as charity, and falsehood by adhering to the truth.
वृत्तं यत्नेन संरक्षेत् | वित्तमायाति याति च |
अक्षीण वृत्तो न क्षीणो |वृत्ततस्तु हतो हतः
Character of a person is very important. It is much more important than the wealth. One should protect one’s character by deliberate effort. The wealth might come and go in life. A person whose character is not marred never goes wrong in life. A person whose character is not steady and falters will fail.
परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः |
परोपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः ||
परोपकाराय दुह्यन्ति गावः |
परोपकारार्थं इदं शरीरं ||
Trees give fruits for others. Rivers flow and bring water to people to need it. Cows give milk which is only partly consumed by its calf and mostly consumed by humans. In the same way we should employ our human forms effectively to help others.
नरस्याभरणं रूपं रूपस्याभरणं गुणः |
गुणस्याभरणं ज्ञानं ज्ञानस्याभरणं क्षमा ||
Good looks are adornments to a person. Good characteristics or qualities are adornments to those looks. Knowledge is an adornment to those good looks and qualities. However, the greatest adornment to a person who has good looks, qualities and knowledge is his forgiving nature.
वृथा वृष्टिः समुद्रेषु वृथा तृप्तस्य भोजनम् |
वृथा ानं समर्थस्य वृथा दीपो दिवापि च ||
It is a waste when rain falls into the ocean which is already abundant with water. It is a waste of food to feed someone who is already well fed. It is a waste of money to provide charity to someone who is able. It is a waste of light to light a lamp in bright sunlight.
चन्दनं शीतलं लोके चन्दनादपि चन्द्रमाः |
चन्द्रचन्दनयोर्मध्ये शीतला साधुसङ्गतिः ||
In the world, sandalwood paste is very soft and pleasant. Much more pleasant than sandalwood paste is the moon and its moonlight. The association of great people is much more pleasant than moon and sandalwood.
