Team Chang outlasts Team Seto to win 2018 Ronin Ryder Cup!

Post date: Jun 09, 2018 6:7:58 AM

After two hard fought days that found both teams tied going into the individual matches, Team Chang won the final day 14-13-7 to take this years tournament.

This year, teams were selected at random using the Suezaki/Toda bingo methodology. Players were divided into A-flight and B-flight prior to selection process and divided evenly between teams. The event was shown live from Facebook to the world.

Seven new members were introduced to the group: Dennis Murakami, Roy Yamamoto, ands George Gonzales on Team Chang. Alvin Yano, Mike Chartier, Harvey Ujimori, and Matt Jackson for Team Seto. Between 68-71 players would participate this years event.

17 matches were scheduled for Day 1 (Better Ball) at Siena. Although the weather was forecasted to be around 105, it was not an issue as the group was able to finish before the hottest part of the day. There was some confusion over the score after the round, but it ended with a tie between Team Seto and Team Chang. Since the losing team must pay for lunch, a tie breaking rule (team with most closest-to-the-pin winners) was applied that turned out favorable to Team Seto. Team Chang graciously paid for lunch at the Main Street buffet.

The 2nd Annual Grandma Toda Slot Tournament was held in the Main Street Hotel and Casino later that same evening. The event included all players, family members and friends. There were three rounds (20 minutes/round) of which the top ten in each round would play again in a final round to determine the winner. James Seto proved his slot machine worthiness by outperforming all others and winning the tournament. Congratulations James!

After a long absence, the RRC returned to Arroyo at Red Rock for Day 2 (Scramble) event. Another early shotgun start helped to escape the higher temperatures of the day. The course was in great shape. Both teams once again fought to a tie, with Team Seto again winning the tie breaker with most CTTP winners for a paid lunch at Triple 7 in Main Street.

Day 3 (Individual) at TPC Summerlin. This course is fantastic. Lots of interesting holes and layout. The course was undergoing some maintenance, so some of the holes were not marked as clearly as normal. Our RRC group had the course pretty much to ourselves, with each foursome starting on their own hole. 34 individual matches started to wrap up after 4 1/2 hours of play. The day was a little hotter than the others, but still not bad. Once all the scores were collected, Team Chang had finally triumphed over Team Seto by a score of 14-13-7 to win the Ronin Ryder Cup XXI Tournament. After three days, it came down to one match difference.

Details of the matches will be posted soon.

It was another exciting and successful year for the RRC golf tournament in Las Vegas. The response from members was very positive. Thanks again to Donald, Julie and all the rest of his support staff for helping to make this a highlight of the year.

The RRC roster has been updated with pictures and sponsor info. The information is stored on a pdf in google somewhere, so hopefully it will stay there. A new page showing the Ronin Ryder Cup genealogy was also posted under Roster and Statistics. If you have trouble seeing any of these links, please let me (Warren) know.

Highlights:

Mitch Higa hit a Royal Flush on 'the wall' at the California on the first day.

Once again, we had a hole-in-one at Siena on #17. 1st year member George Gonzales hit one directly into the cup from about 97 yards.

New Ronin Ryder Cup T-shirts designed by Cory were given to each team member. The T-shorts look great! Thanks Cory!

Grant, Glenn, and David did not have to treat any injuries.

Louie stayed out of the hospital again this year.
